Andy Hoi- Cisu Chan
Andy Hoi-Csiu Chan (1942–2024, Taishan, China) was one of the most influential Chinese watercolor painters in Chicago during his lifetime. A third-generation Lingnan School artist and disciple of Professor Chao Shao-an, he devoted nearly sixty years to painting. Chan taught hundreds of students and generously supported Chinese and Chinese American artists, nurturing both their creative practices and personal lives. His paintings reflect the Lingnan School’s vitality through wide-ranging subjects, vivid forms, rich color, and vigorous, mature brushwork. With deep, substantial ink work and varied techniques, he created images marked by movement, clarity, and strong thematic presence across a remarkable artistic legacy.
